Service Development for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) Case Study
"We conducted research on behalf of our client to support the development of a new service tailored to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK."
Introduction
We conducted research on behalf of our client to support the development of a new service tailored to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK. The company sought to understand the challenges faced by senior decision-makers at SMEs, their decision-making processes when purchasing products and services, and the sources they rely on for business news and information. FG Connect conducted in-depth interviews to gather insights that would inform the development of a service that better addresses the needs of these businesses.
Specifications
The research involved a range of 45-minute depth interviews, all conducted via Microsoft Teams video calls. The target audience included senior decision-makers from UK SMEs with 10 to 249 employees across a variety of sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, professional services, scientific and technical industries, accommodation and food services, retail, education, and business administration. The participants were selected based on their seniority in the organisation, ensuring the inclusion of key roles such as CEOs, COOs, Heads of Finance, CFOs, Heads of Operations, Partners, Board Directors, and Company Secretaries. Additionally, two participants were from roles focused on sustainability, such as Heads of Sustainability or Chief Sustainability Officers, typically found in companies with 100+ employees.
Results
The interviews provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by senior decision-makers in SMEs and uncovered the pain points they faced as well as, their purchasing behaviours, and their information-seeking habits. This allowed our client to understand how they make informed decisions in their respective sectors.
